I think I'm one of the few people who have read this book that actually had kind of a meh reaction to it. I'm a huge Del Toro fan, too.
The book showed a lot of promise, what with the vampire bit being explained away as a virus. That I could get behind.
However, the pacing and the style of the book just had me slogging along. I set the book down a couple of times to read something else, I was that bored with it.
The characters were cliche. Setrakian, as a sort of Yoda to Eph's Luke, was very predictable. The only character I really connected with was Gus, who intrigued me with his street logic and his machismo. I look forward to seeing more Gus in the future.
I'll keep reading the series because I look forward to seeing what happens with the six other Masters. However, not impressed with the first installment of the trilogy. I expected a lot more out of horror and fantasy's leading man in the field.
