The Other, by Thomas Tryon

The Other is one of those creepy books that stays with you long after you've read it, wriggling its way into your subconscious, and making itself known in your dreams. I went into it knowing that it was going to be a disturbing book (it has been recommended on a Most Disturbing Books list over on LibraryThing). I was still a little shocked and dismayed by what I read, though. And I have a pretty high tolerance for shock value.

The Other is about twin boys living during the early part of the twentieth century. I can't say too much without giving away most of the plot, but suffice it to say that it's a little bit like watching The Good Son and reading a good Stephen King novel at the same time. It has murder, mystery, guilt, and suspense all wrapped up into a parcel. The reader is able to sympathize with most of the characters and feels pain at the end with the death of one of the main protagonists.

I give it four stars out of five.
